Basic Grooming Needs
Beyond our extensive veterinary treatments, Morgan Animal Hospital offers basic grooming services to include bathing, flea and tick treatments, nail trimming, and expression of the anal glands.
Bathting and Flea & Tick Treatments
Fleas and ticks are prevalent in the Northern Alabama area. Bathing helps keep your dog’s skin and coat clean, healthy, and free of parasites. Some dogs need more frequent baths than others, depending on their coat and how quickly they get grimy.
If you have a pet who does not like their nails trimmed, this very important basic grooming need can become extremely difficult. Sometimes even the most docile pet can become aggressive when its time to trim their nails.
Why is it so important to have my dog’s nails trimmed?
- Torn nails are painful and easily infected requiring soaking and long-term antibiotics or surgical removal.
- Dogs don’t walk correctly when the nails are too long and this strains the leg muscles and torques the spine.
- Long nails grow around and into the bottom of the foot. The dewclaw nail will grow into the leg. Ingrown nails are often infected, are always painful, and make some dogs downright mean.
- Nails help provide traction and increase a pet’s ability to walk and run without slipping. Pets with excessively long nails hurt themselves because they slip and fall.
Anal sac expression must be performed to maintain the dog’s hygiene and to eliminate discomfort. Discomfort is evidenced by the dog dragging its posterior on the ground (“scooting”), licking or biting at the anus, sitting uncomfortably, having difficulty sitting or standing, or chasing its tail.
